If you’re looking for a camera for portraits and lots of other things, the Sony Alpha a7R IV is a fantastic option.. It is the lightest of all portrait cameras on this list, has an incredibly high resolution, takes absolutely fantastic photos and does just about everything well. The 567 phase detection points combined with the 425 contrast points really blow everything else on this list (and most lists) out of the water. So if there is a lot of movement in your portrait photography, this may be the best camera you can get.
AF accuracy drops slightly when shooting at 8 or 10 frames per second, but it’s only really noticeable if you have fast-moving subjects like kids running around. There’s also a pixel shift mode, which while not ideal for most portrait photography (your subject would have to remain absolutely still), is a fantastic option for other applications and can increase the resolution of your image to a whopping 240 MP. The Canon 5D Mark IV (test) comes with a high-speed full-frame CMOS sensor and an exceptionally fast DIGIC 6+ image processor. Together, they provide a native ISO range of 100-32000 (can be extended to 50—102400), which is particularly impressive and makes it a great camera for shooting in low-light conditions..
As far as megapixels are concerned, 30 MP hits the sweet spot for many where 50 MP is too much and 22 MP is no longer competitive. There is enough resolution for large prints and excellent cropping, while the image files aren’t large enough to affect your image processing speed.. The 61-point autofocus system of the Mark IV isn’t quite as advanced as the Nikon D850 and is certainly lagging behind the Sony A7 series, but it scores pretty well overall — even in low light conditions. When you upgrade from 5D Mark III, it’s a huge improvement.
One thing Canon excels at is color science, and all images that come out of the Canon 5D Mark IV have fantastic color rendering.. The video features of the Canon 5D Mark IV are also pretty impressive, with the ability to produce 4K cinema-quality videos at up to 30 frames per second. In terms of ergonomics, the Canon 5D Mark IV outperforms both the Sony a7r IV and the Fujifilm GFX 50R in terms of comfort and manageability (although the Nikon D850 shines in that regard too).
